Three Questions

1. I'm facing a problem with my content. Right now, I am addressing the topic of funerals and patients with illness. I feel like I need a third or fourth topic. Any suggestions? I was thinking, maybe I could discuss the topic of dealing with divorced individuals as well, and maybe also dealing with families who have recently had miscarriages? Too morbid for a funny informative book?

2. I am looking for book binding places and paper places in Toronto. I feel like I've come to a limit looking at paper at the usual place I go to. I am looking for something heavy creamy very subtly textured feel for my book. Any suggestions?

3. How do you feel about setting copy text in colour? I'm debating if I should set it in a very subtle brown.

  1. 1. I think adding those extra topics would make your book seem like its trying to cover too many things. I don't think the topic of divorce would fit anywhere in there, because you're focusing on sicknesses/deaths. Although divorce could be seen as death of a relationship...alot of the times its a conflict and battle.

    3. I like copy in colour, as long as its subtle and still easy to read.

  2. 3. Why not! I think setting your copy text in colour would be nice.

    2. I'm not sure where you usually get your paper from, but the Japanese Paper Place on Queen has almost everything you can think of - you'd have to cut it down to size though, as they sell their paper in large sheets.

  3. 3. Copy text in colour is quite a common practice! I've seen bright red on pink paper, dark blue on gray paper. A very subtle brown is elegant! Robert Bringhurst might approve.

  4. 1. I think because your book is "light" adding non-death events such as divorce could give it a lighter feel in a way...not sure about miscarriages this topic is usually too sensitive (sounds weird when talking about deaths but it is somehow)

  5. 3. i think it all comes to experimentation to see if it works! =) i don't see why it can't work.

  6. 3. I think if the contrast is there and the colours are coordinated, it would be really lovely. Rich brown on creamy paper is a really really nice combination and I highly recommend it (looks like it's the direction you want to go in?)

  7. 3. Setting your copy in colour I think would be a very nice touch as long as it is done right. I have used brown copy before on a cream coloured paper and it turned out really bad. It was because the brown I used was too light and issues of readability came into play. If you do go with brown, which I think you should, make it a rich brown like mentioned by the person above, dark enough that you still see it as brown and can easily read it. The use of brown reminds me of burrials and the dirt that is layed over top of the grave, like a finishing touch, which seems perfect for your book topic!

  8. 1. To add a bit more humour you could add something like pet deaths or something, I dunno, just something I thought of, although maybe that goes under funerals, and may make the book too humourless, so maybe just go with what you have.

    3. Also I think giving the text a colour will be a very nice touch, that of course depends on the type of paper, brown text on cream coloured paper sounds like a nice idea
